The Kleine Zalze Conference Venue and Golf Estate borders Stellenbosch Country Club and is opposite Stellenbosch Square, which offers shoppers an array of restaurants, boutiques and retail outlets.
Four kilometres (2.5 miles) away is the historic town of Stellenbosch with its rich cultural heritage, classic Cape architecture and eclectic mix of unique shops, art galleries and world famous wine estates. Within a 20 to 30 minute drive, are the beaches of Strand and Gordon's Bay and the picturesque Franschhoek Valley.
At Kleine Zalze it is believed that great wines are made in the vineyard. The production of top quality wine requires intensive care and time, thus every effort is made to strive for perfection. Close attention is paid to cultivating grapes of exceptional quality and each vineyard is assessed and managed individually during the growth period.
Bit of History:
Nicolaas Cleef, a German settler from the small town of Gross Salze, after which he named the farm, was the first occupant. He and his French Huguenot wife, Barbere le Febre, planted the first vineyard there in 1683. Later, in 1695, when the cellar was built and the first wine made, Governor Simon van der Stel officially granted him to two-part, 57 morgen farm, De Groote Zalze. A succession of subsequent Dutch owners of the farm saw the name evolve to the Dutch vernacular of Zalze.
Through the years, wine has been made on the farm by the different owners which include some well-known South African families – Colyn, Krige, Du Toit and De Waal.
